Journal, 1848-1857, including account of travel to England in 1854; traveling to Savannah, Ga., and Canada in 1856; traveling to Chicago in 1857; poems and songs written by various students including tributes upon the deaths of S[ims] E. Brown, James Albert Hopkins, and John C. Calhoun; songs include lyrics to "Billy Mabin's oh!" with note that Class of 1852 was the last to sing this before the Congaree House, a popular hotel at the northwest corner of Lady and Main Streets in Columbia, S.C., of which "Uncle" Billy Maybin, as he was familiarly called, was the proprietor during this period. Scrapbook, 1850-1862 (stored off-site), consisting of lithographs, genre prints, and clippings re politics, poetry, news items, Civil War; Palmetto Guards; including "Resolutions of the Class of 1851," six programs associated with events honoring Commencement of S.C. College during Dec. of 1851 and 1852, including dances and other social events; clipping re duel of William B. Taber and Edward Magrath; color engravings of European and American landscapes; obituaries and tributes of South Carolinians; and poems, including "By the Banks of the Edisto River," and a reference to "Bleeding Kansas," the controversy over the territory's future as a free or slave state, called "An Appeal for Kansas."
